Klokotnitsa
   Battle in 1230 that established Bulgaria (q.v.) as the chief power in the Balkan Peninsula (q.v.). It halted the expansion of the Despotate of Epiros (q.v.), whose ruler Theodore Komnenos Doukas (q.v.) was captured by Tsar John Asen II (qq.v.), eliminating the despotate as a competitor in the race to seize Constantinople (q.v.), then held by the Latin Empire (q.v.).
